What ISO 22301 Business Continuity Management Means
ISO 22301 is the international requirements standard for a Business Continuity Management System, or BCMS. It provides a structured way to identify priority activities, understand disruption impacts, establish continuity strategies, prepare response arrangements, exercise the plans and improve the system over time.
The current published edition is ISO 22301:2019 with Amendment 1:2024. ISO has started work on a future revision, but the replacement edition is not yet published. Montt Walex confirms the applicable edition and any transition requirements when the project begins.
When Your Organisation May Need ISO 22301
ISO 22301 becomes commercially relevant when service interruption could affect customers, public services, contractual commitments, revenue, safety, information, supply chains or reputation.
- A government entity, major customer, tender or vendor-registration process asks for business continuity evidence or ISO 22301 certification.
- The organisation has continuity documents, but no reliable business impact analysis, recovery objectives or exercise records.
- Operations depend on critical personnel, utilities, facilities, technology, suppliers, logistics or outsourced services.
- Management needs one coordinated framework for disruption response, recovery decisions and communications.
- The company is expanding across sites or countries and needs consistent continuity arrangements.
- An audit, incident or customer review has identified weaknesses in recovery planning or plan testing.
H2 ISO 22301 and UAE Business Continuity Requirements
The UAE also has a National Business Continuity Management System Standard, AE SCNS NCEMA 7000 2021. UAE government entities and some critical, regulated, contracted or government-linked organisations may need to address national, emirate-level, sector, customer or tender requirements alongside ISO 22301.
ISO 22301 and NCEMA 7000 are related but should not be treated as automatically interchangeable. The applicable requirement must be confirmed from the responsible authority, regulator, customer or tender document. Where both apply, Montt Walex can map the requirements and organise one coordinated implementation programme.
Benefits of an Effective BCMS
- Clear recovery priorities based on the impact of disruption over time
- Defined roles, escalation routes and decision authority during incidents
- Continuity strategies based on real dependencies and available resources
- Tested plans for maintaining and restoring priority products and services
- Better evidence for customers, tenders, regulators and certification audits
- Stronger coordination between operations, HSE, facilities, IT, HR, procurement and management
- A repeatable programme for exercises, reviews and continual improvement
Our ISO 22301 Consultancy Scope
Montt Walex manages the BCMS as an implementation project rather than a documentation exercise. The scope is adjusted to the organisation's activities, sites, contractual obligations, operating risks and certification objective.
Gap Assessment and BCMS Scope
We review existing plans, risk records, emergency arrangements, IT recovery documents, supplier controls and audit evidence. We then define the BCMS scope, interested parties, applicable requirements, governance structure and implementation plan.
Business Impact Analysis
We facilitate a business impact analysis to identify priority activities, disruption impacts, acceptable timeframes, dependencies, minimum resource requirements and recovery objectives. The analysis provides the basis for continuity strategies and plans.
Continuity Risk Assessment
We assess disruption scenarios and vulnerabilities that could affect priority activities. The review considers relevant people, premises, utilities, information, technology, equipment, suppliers, logistics and external dependencies without replacing specialist engineering, cyber-security or safety studies where those are required.
Continuity Strategies and Solutions
We help management select workable arrangements for people, work locations, technology, information, equipment, suppliers and communications. Proposed strategies are checked against recovery priorities, operational constraints, costs and available resources.
Plans and Response Structure
We develop or improve business continuity plans, incident escalation, response roles, contact arrangements, communication protocols, recovery actions and return-to-normal steps. Plans are written for the people who must use them during disruption.
Awareness Exercises and Testing
We brief relevant personnel and design exercises suited to the organisation's risks and maturity. Tabletop exercises, simulations or selected operational tests are documented, reviewed and converted into corrective actions and plan improvements.
Internal Audit Management Review and Certification Support
We support internal audit, corrective-action closure and management review before the external audit. Certification is performed and decided by an independent certification body. Where requested, Montt Walex can coordinate quotations and scheduling with an accredited certification body while keeping consultancy and certification decisions separate.

BCMS Business Continuity Plans and Disaster Recovery
A business continuity plan is one part of a BCMS. The BCMS also includes governance, impact analysis, risk assessment, strategies, competence, exercises, performance evaluation and continual improvement.
IT disaster recovery focuses on restoring technology, systems and data. ISO 22301 addresses the wider continuity of products, services and organisational activities. IT recovery objectives should support the business priorities established through the BIA, but specialist technical recovery design may require a separate IT or cyber-security provider.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the current version of ISO 22301
The current published edition is ISO 22301:2019 with Amendment 1:2024. ISO has begun revising the standard. Organisations should continue using the current published requirements until a replacement and any transition arrangements are formally issued.
Is ISO 22301 certification mandatory in the UAE
ISO 22301 certification is not automatically mandatory for every UAE organisation. It may be required by a regulator, authority, customer, contract, tender or group policy. The applicable requirement should be confirmed before the project scope is agreed.
What is the difference between ISO 22301 and NCEMA 7000
ISO 22301 is an international BCMS requirements standard. AE SCNS NCEMA 7000 2021 is the UAE national business continuity standard. They share important principles, but the applicable clauses, evidence and approval route should be mapped when both are required.
Can you improve an existing business continuity plan
Yes. We can review existing plans, BIA records, recovery objectives, IT disaster-recovery arrangements and exercise evidence, then build the missing BCMS components rather than restart without reason.
How long does ISO 22301 implementation take
The timeline depends on the number of sites, critical activities, existing documentation, management availability, exercise scope and certification target. A realistic schedule is confirmed after the initial review.
How much does ISO 22301 consultancy cost in the UAE
Cost depends on organisational size, BCMS scope, sites, complexity, current maturity, BIA workload, exercise requirements and certification support. Montt Walex prepares a customised quotation after confirming these factors.
Does Montt Walex issue the ISO 22301 certificate
No. Montt Walex provides consultancy, implementation and audit preparation. An independent certification body performs the certification audit and decides whether to issue the certificate.
Do you provide ISO 22301 consultancy in Abu Dhabi and Dubai
Yes. Montt Walex is based in Abu Dhabi and supports ISO 22301 projects in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and across the UAE.
